Important shipper news

One of our wonderful shippers is hanging up her tapegun! This happens from time to time, as those of you who've been with us a while can attest to — being a shipper is a demanding volunteer position, and most of our lives can't survive on hold for too long while the cards are a-waiting. We've had to say goodbye four other times, but it never seems to get easier!

Fabre's been with us since February, and has done such a WONDERFUL job – but, she and her family have been sacrificing a lot for our heroes. Not only their dining room table, but her focus on other things like family time and their business. It's time to release Fabre joyfully to return to cooking with gusto (she's a chef, if you didn't know)!

Please join us in thanking her for being such a gracious and dedicated shipper this year - for her heart and passion, for the extra time she's put in on bloghops and coordinating card drives at craft conventions, and the wonderful things she's done for our heroes!

Leave your comments on this blog post for her - let's celebrate Fabre!

Mailing in December
Please refrain from sending your cards to Fabre; she's finishing up what's been sent, and will be passing on other cards and donations that come in, so let's let her mail return to a normal volume. With the exception, of course, of a thank you card if you wish to send her one!

If you're sending a flat rate package in December, you can mail it to Kansas or Washington at no extra cost; if it's not flat rate and you'd like to hang onto it for our new east coast shipper in January, that's fine. We'll extend the 25+1 challenge til she's on board, so your cards can still be entered for our 20 prizes!

Shippers plan
And now, lest you worry, we do have another east coast shipper waiting in the wings! We'll have her start after Christmas, to allow her some time to prepare...and once she's ready we'll post her address in the Mailroom and introduce her on this blog - when we do, join us in welcoming her with cards!

Some of you have asked why we don't have more shippers than we do. For a season we'd had five shippers, and found ourselves not collecting enough cards in each location fast enough to pack enough boxes to meet requests. For example, California might have a bunch of birthday cards, and Wisconsin enough love cards, but we couldn't get them together to pack up a requested selection. And we found that three seems to be the "right" number for most of the year.

The future plan is to watch the quantities of cards as they continue, and determine the point at which we can likely add a 4th shipper and still be able to meet our heroes' requests. Another thing we're entertaining is adding a few shippers just for the holiday shipping season (September/October/November) to ease the load - if you're interested, stay tuned to our blog and enews for details next summer!

Again, a big thank you for helping us as card makers get our cards going to where they belong. Without our shippers, we wouldn't have the success that we do. May God bless you, enjoy your extra time, and thank you for being our hero.

Fabre, Just wanted to say THANK YOU for all of your hard work!!! You were such a pleasure to work with!!

Fabre I think of you as "my" shipper and so feel a bit of sadness mixed with understanding at your needing to step down from shipping. Whenever I contacted you the reply you sent was kind and encouraging. Your warmth and energy was always apparent in your activities for OWH.

I do hope you will still be around in the card making online groups.

May the kindness you have given to all come back to you a thousand fold.

Dear Fabre,

I am broken hearted to lose yet another shipper that has been so enthusiastic and friendly, but I can fully see, based on the great increase of volume since when I joined in, that few, if any, could possibly "volunteer" the time it demands. Thank you for all your hard work and dedication to our heroes, as well as the kind touch you have had that gave me personal motivation to increase my involvement many times. You will be greatly missed!

Thank you for your cheerful and diligent work on behalf of OWH. I, too think of you as "my shipper", and am sad to see you go. As a very busy mother and home maker myself, I was amazed you were able to 'do it all'. Best of blessings in your follow-on activities.

Dear Fabre,

I did not know you personally but I do know what your work meant to my contacts. You helped make their days and those of their families. Many a soldier has commented that they could not believe that people still made cards by hand and that OWH would send enough for the entire battalion many times a year. Each and everyone was treasured. Your touch in making this happen will be missed but I wish you only happiness in your new turn in life.
Do stay in contact with us, for we would all like to know how you are doing. Thank you for your time, effort and energy in making life easier for our troops. I will never look at a card the same way again.
Wishing you the best,
Debbie Leigh

Fabre thank you for all you've done for our soldiers but also for being my shipper. Your comments on cards made and your thoughtfulness in sending info to me has been very much appreciated. Taking time for family is always a good thing. Operation Write Home will continue and all your card makers will continue to send cards on but it will seem a little sad not to send cards to you but I will welcome a new shipper with the same dedication I gave to you. Thanks again.

I was one of the recipients of the shoebox full of cards back in 2006-2007. We distributed them to our patients and soldiers assigned to our unit. I can not tell you enough how much the soldiers abroad appreciate your support and the support of this organizations. Thank you for remembering us and for helping us to remember our special loved ones.
