Newbie Q&A

A number of our newer cardmakers have been asking some common questions that we'd love to answer...these are things that are often answered elsewhere, but gathering them together might help.

Where do I send my cards? The Mailroom has a blinking arrow right overtop the addresses.

Do I send envelopes? You may send them, but you can also send cards without. The pros and cons are for you to weigh: sending envelopes costs you a little more, but saves our shippers loads of work if the cards are already tucked properly.....not sending envelopes may mean you'll get more cards into a box, which is great, and just means extra labor for our shippers; most people include a donation toward envelopes and shipping. We're okay with whichever you choose.
What could put my cards in the hospital? There are a few, and remember - none is a cardinal sin. Our shippers each have a "Card Hospital" where cards in need of help rest til the shipper has time for triage.
  • Glitter. Not permitted! It makes a mess on our heroes' uniforms and makes them visible to night-vision goggles. So please please please, leave your glitter for your own cards, and watch out that your box doesn't get sprinkled by your mom's birthday card nearby.
  • Dark card bases without liners. Our heroes have no white pens, so we really need to be sure that even a pencil will show up. If in doubt, add a liner! (Dixie asked Soldier Sam and he said there are no gel pens in Iraq!)
  • Cards not marked on the back. We add "Operation Write Home" to the backs of each card ("OWH" isn't enough since we need families to google the name to find us!). This can take our shippers hours to do in the quantities we receive cards.
  • Orphan embellishments. Buttons, ribbons, alphabet stickers, papers, and other pieces that aren't glued down well can fall off and need to be reattached...we regularly find bits of cards lying around and have no idea where they came from! Remember, OWH cards won't be treated with kid gloves, so be sure they're stable. Many times they come off because of gluesticks or cheap tape runners that let go; other times, it's because of using too little adhesive.
  • "Sneeze." Imagine, if you will, unrelated stickers, foamies, or stamps scattered randomly on a piece of cardstock. Often these kinds of cards are done by children and are just fine (please have the kids write their names on the back and write a note inside! Our heroes LOVE mail from kids). But many times we get hundreds of cards at a time that clearly put quantity above quality - these cards end up in the hospital to have some ribbon, patterned paper, or embellishments added. We know that the cards that show attention to detail are selected quickly, and we fix them up so our heroes don't leave these for last in the bottom of a box!  (Note! Simple cards are fine — in fact they often help us get more in a box because they're not half an inch thick! We're talking about randomly scattered elements on these.)
  • Inappropriate themes. Remember that our heroes are grown adults sending cards home; so anything with a sentiment for "daddy" from a child is not appropriate. Nor is "our new home," "wish you were here," or "we're pregnant." We occasionally get skull and crossbones on cards, especially toward Halloween - and we ask that you avoid death imagery.
Special note: A thick embellishment that's held on by a glue dot seems to have a tendency to grab onto another card (a corner slips between the embellishment and cardstock), and starts yanking at whatever paper it comes in contact with. These kinds of embellishments have been known to destroy a card next to itself. Please be sparing with thick embellishments, since they have a really hard time surviving the postal system anyway; and make certain that adhesive is completely beneath your button or ribbon and none sticks out. Cards that just have ONE thick embellishment (particular offender: a single button) seem to cause this problem more often than cards that have a more even distribution of thickness.

Do you need more shippers? At this time, no; when we've had more shippers in the past, we've not been able to assemble boxes fast enough to meet our heroes' needs. Themes got divided so one didn't have any birthday, or another was out of a holiday, etc. Three seems to work fairly well right now.

This info has been merged into the "About OWH" page for newbies too....hopefully it helps!

Camas, WA Joins Together for Our Heroes

When a member of LaCamas Swim & Sport asked an Operation Write Home cardmaker to host a cardmaking party, it provided the motivation to organize the June 10th cardmaking party in Camas, WA. The Thursday afternoon date was selected, posters were hung and OWH was sent an announcement.

Cardmakers Ellen H., Gail H., Jeanette S., and Teresa K. were enlisted to make card kits since most of the participants were not experienced cardmakers. The participants were willing to bring items for the soup-and-bread lunch and for snacking. A donation box was suggested when the latest Mailroom Monday post made us realize how much OWH spends on shipping.

When lunch was over, out came the sample cards and card kits. Ellen and Jeanette teamed up to help the new cardmakers at the first table.

Gail and Teresa settled at the second table. Esther also sat at the table for a few seconds, but there were so many tasks that she was up and running most of the time.

Lori was the helper at the third table.

Jack, a veteran of World War II and the Korean War, agreed to use the automatic Operation Write Home stamp on the back of the completed cards. The group kept him busy. In two hours all the card kits had been turned into handmade blank cards for our deployed heroes. Three AnyHero cards were also written with the help of the "Suggestions for Any Hero Letters ."

The final total was 208 quality cards from 15 cardmakers (including a veteran) and $26.25 in donations. This success was due to cardmakers willing to prepare kits, participants willing to bring food for lunch and snacks, everyone enjoying the party, generous people willing to keep Operation Write Home working by donating cash, and LaCamas Swim & Sport graciously allowing the free use of the community room. A BIG "thank you" to all involved in any part of the June 10th event.

Brand new features!

By popular demand...two brand new features! Our facebook fans have been helping kick the tires....so please join everyone there and shout out a hello!

FORUM!
Many of you who aren't on Facebook have been asking for a place to chat about all things OWH...and now we have that for you! You can get to it via a few places (and an easy link here: http://operationwritehome.org/forum ....depending on your browser, you may find one easier than the other:

  1. From our homepage, hover your mouse over the button for the "CONNECT" page (far right link in the button bar)....you'll see the forum there.
  2. From the blogs, the same forum can be reached using the blue Forum "thought bubble" off to the right. It's the same forum, same content, just repackaged over here on the blog. For certain browsers, this just may be easier!
This won't replace Facebook or blogs by any means....if there are major announcements we'll always post them in several locations. (Facebookers tend to get a preview of things when we need help, like kicking tires on Forums!)

So feel free to chat away, ask questions, offer suggestions....let's get to know each other!

GALLERY!
We now also have a photo gallery for your cards! You can certainly still post them on your blogs, and on our Facebook wall...but some folks have still needed a further option. So if you have no blog, you can post your card in the gallery and then grab the url to use with InLinkz for challenges. You can also use a gallery post for a bloghop (though a blog is recommended, since you can add so much more to a blog post than you can to a gallery caption!)

To get to the gallery, go to our main homepage and hover your mouse over the button for "CARDS" and you'll see the gallery there. And here's a quick link: http://operationwritehome.org/gallery

Mailroom Monday: June 14, 2010 - Happy Flag Day!

This week, OWH shippers packed up and shipped out 9,476 cards to send to our heroes, at a cost of $350.00. Yes, in one week!  Amazing!!! Many thanks to all of you who donate the cards---and the shipping funds!!

We also surpassed another landmark: over 450,000 cards sent to our heroes!!! How long til we reach half a million?

Today is also Flag Day....read a little about the history of the holiday here. And enjoy this little video!

OWH also received a terrific package that travelled to Kansas, all the way from Baghdad - this beautiful flag and letter! (Check out Kris' little four-legged helper getting some attention too!)
You sent two boxes of cards to our unit. I can't begin to tell you what they meant to our unit. We issue ID cards as part of our mission. We set the boxes out to share with anyone that came in for a new card. The word spread quickly!! Please share with everyone that all their time, effort and money to mail the cards was appreciated beyond words. God Bless You!

Thankful Thursday: June 10, 2010

This week our shippers received and processed 8,295 cards from all of you! WOW! I think they call that the "bloghop bump!" A special thank you to those stepping up to cover our huge shipping bills lately too!

One thing we've noticed (and we find this each time we get a lot of new cardmakers from a bloghop or magazine article): we're seeing a lot of glitter cards, and a lot of dark cards without liners. Our shippers would love your help in cutting the "hospital" cards down by taking care of those before sending them. This first pile of cards is the 'before' picture of the hospital in Washington...and the second is after an entire evening of adding liners, re-securing amputee embellishments, overized cards that need an envelope dug up to fit them, and other triage treatments. 406 patients were finally released from quarantine! We appreciate all your help in preparing your cards so our shippers can focus on packing them up and getting them out the door.

Mailroom Monday: June 7, 2010

6,200 cards were shipped out this week, at a cost of $225....and all our Fourth of July cards are just about outta here! Isn't it odd to always be far ahead of holidays? Anyone humming Christmas carols yet?

The pile of boxes pictured here was mailed out last Friday! Over $300 in shipping costs here. The tall stack on the right is boxes headed out to our heroes; the ones on the left are all the prizes offered up by OWH during the hop! Woohoo!
