Another present for OWH!

And this time it's a long-awaited gift....not too many people know about it, but for me, Sandy, and our board....it's a ginormous achievement!!

Did you catch it? Did you see it? It's right there. Look again.

It's that little ® that we can now put in our logo!!! Yes, we obtained our Registered Trademark!! It looks like it went through in November, but due to long wait times for things to happen (this process has taken over a year!), I didn't find out til recently that it had passed the public comment period just fine. You can see our official listing on the Trademarks and Patent Office Website.

What does that little mark mean? There's more info on Registered Trademarks on this wikipedia page for those who want to know what a TM and ® are. But for me, it means peace of mind. It means WE are Operation Write Home, there's no challenging us for the name...and I don't have to lose any more sleep!  We do have responsibilities to enforce our mark, so if you ever see anyone using the name with what looks to you to be unauthorized use, please let us know asap.

What should YOU do when you want to post about OWH, or put together a flyer, etc? I still need to find out more details, but if you're advertising on behalf of OWH, or blogging about what you're doing with us, that's totally fine. You don't need prior approval, just go for it as usual. If you want to add the ® after our name in your text, you're welcome to! We'd love to see what you're doing, though, so if you create a flyer just drop a copy in email for us. Just so we know what's out there!

What about flyers already downloaded from this site without the ®? Go ahead and use them for now! We'll be posting new logos (you can snag the one in this post if you want for now) and brand new resources with the new logo - it's going to take a little time, so be patient :)

What about my OWH stamp? Go ahead and use it! When we reorder to continue sending out the freebie stamps, we'll have the ® added to the new ones. We're papercrafters, we use things til they don't work anymore, so please stamp til the rubber gives out :)

One more favor to ask: for those who still have any of the old cardsforheroes.org addresses in your email address book, PLEASE change those to the new operationwritehome.org addresses. Same first name, just change the last part. We still get email to the old account, and would love to direct that mail properly. Thanks :)

To celebrate with us, join today's
 Holiday Vacation challenge on
in honor of our little ®!

Mailroom Monday: December 27, 2010

Wow...it's our final Mailroom Monday post of 2010!! This week 6,625 cards were mailed out - at a cost of $248.20!  (And check out the picture of what santa claus brought to each shipper - a new 3" tape gun and case of packing tape! Are we geeky or what!)

What an amazing year it has been! Many thanks to all of you who make this work possible....it's been astonishing to see the growth - and the number of heroes we have continued to support throughout the whole year!

A quick note about receipts: We'll be emailing those out by the end of January - sooner if possible. We are in the midst of a data conversion that will make it possible to email them this year, instead of going with paper like we did last year....saving us tons of money and labor! Stay tuned to the Homefront Blog and Facebook for a notice about when those go out; if you don't receive one when they get emailed out, you can let us know your email addy and we'll get one right out to you.

A Christmas present for YOU

We have a little gift for you...your very own OWH calendar! You can download a single-page calendar so you get the year at a glance (pdf is here, or you can click on the image below once, then right-click on the 2nd larger image to download).....
And we also have the full monthly version for you to print out as well! The pdf of all 12 months plus the cover can be downloaded by clicking here, or you can click on each jpg below individually; click once to enlarge in a new window, then right-click on that one. Note that these are a full 8.5 x 11; if your printer doesn't print all the way to the edge of the paper, you may need to reduce the size in your print dialog box to accomodate printer settings.

You might like to get scrappy with your calendar....add real buttons on the deadline dates, trim it up with some ribbon - have fun! Let us know if you post a photo of your adaptation of the calendar, or a picture of where it hangs in your craft room....we'd all love to see!

You may also wish to print out calendars for your friends in your stamp clubs - what a great way to help everyone keep on track with OWH deadlines!

Merry Christmas!

Home through letters for Christmas

Tis the season of Christmas, and all through my dreams
Are visions of family and holiday scenes.
My duty calls me far from those I hold dear
But through letters and photos, their hearts are quite near.

My mind’s eye strains homeward to be with them now
And I can nearly see Christmas arrayed in my town.
I picture decorations of gold, green and red,
And my children all nestled and snug in their beds.
I dream of the adventure to pick out a tree
And driving through town for the lights we may see.
The cooking, the eggnog, the holiday baking
The parties, celebrations, and much merry-making!
I picture rehearsals for this year’s Christmas pageant -
The joy of the performance I can only imagine.
A reminder of God’s love come down to the earth
The hope of the world wrapped up in one birth.
My heart wants to go to the places I dream of
And I find myself wistful to mail home my love
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But a box full of cards and letters of cheer!
Handmade creations, each one a work of art,
Can carry my love and transport my heart,
My thoughts I wrote down, envelopes I did lick,
And gave them all quickly to our Postman Nick.
(okay so she's Kerry, not Nick!)
More rapid than eagles his postal truck came,
And he whistled, and shouted, delivered them by name!
“Here Johnny! Here Sarah! A card for Kerry and Timmy!
Happy mail now for Mother, and one for you, Jimmy!”

Through a card, my heart’s home with my family so dear
Grateful to have them, to serve them, and defend them all year.
Hear us exclaim, ‘ere we are out of your sight,
"Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good-night!"

Volunteer Rallies Her Company for OWH

This is an article that appeared in Colonial Life's company newsletter - it's great to see a cardmaker highlighted this way, and her efforts to organize her company are wonderful!
Colonial Life’s Cathy Brooks always enjoyed scrapbooking and crafts, but when she found a cause for her favorite hobby, it took on a whole new meaning.
She often sends handmade, blank, greeting cards to her friends and family, and one day she read about a holiday card–making program for troops overseas. She began teaching card-making classes at the local scrapbook store and collected blank cards to ship to troops for the Christmas holiday. But she wanted to do more.
She began to do some research, and found out about Operation Write Home (OWH), which sends blank, handmade cards to troops for all occasions year round. She knew that other crafters at Colonial Life would share her joy in creating cards for the troops.
“I talked to the volunteer coordinator here, and she asked me if I would run it,” says Brooks. “I started in July, and had my first table set up outside the cafeteria and got people to sign up for card-making classes.”
Now, she teaches those classes on the Columbia campus each month and has 18 card-makers to assist in filling boxes with their handmade cards for troops to send back home. Many co-workers also participate in Hero Mail, in which volunteers write letters to deployed troops who may not get many letters from home.
“The great thing about the website is that it’s a wellspring of information and motivation,” says Brooks. “The site has card-making tutorials, thank-you posts from troops and their families, a link to donate funds for shipping cards overseas, and weekly card totals. There are also ‘do’s and don’ts,’ like no glitter, since it can make soldiers visible at night.”
In addition to the cards made in classes, Colonial Life employees and their family members have contributed more than 400 pieces of Hero Mail for the holidays. Troops particularly like to post pictures and letters from children. The troops say the mail helps them know that even people they’ve never met are thinking of them.
Operation Write Home has sent more than 650,000 handmade cards to deployed troops since it began in 2007 and has 3,000 card-makers nationwide. The cards provide a way that troops can send letters and holiday cards to their families, while Hero Mail keeps troops connected to home. Brooks says that the troops and their families enjoy getting something handmade and handwritten.
“It all just touched something in me,” says Brooks. “I can’t imagine being away from family. A lot of these people are young, with young kids, and have been deployed five or six times. I appreciate the fact that they are willing to do this, and it makes me feel good when I do something for them.”

OWH's Biggest Needs

If you're looking to target what the biggest needs are for Operation Write Home, you've come to the right place! We'll update this post from time to time - rather than on the Mailroom Monday posts. We also have a link to this post on our homepage, so you can always find it quickly! You can also click on the "Needs" category off to the right.

Note: We accept any themes your creativity produces - so if you're not in the "zone" to meet the requests on this post, please don't hold back on what you have to offer for our heroes!

IMPORTANT DEADLINE NOTE:
OUR OCT 30th DEADLINE HAS PASSED FOR CHRISTMAS CARDS! You can send them, but we'll be holding them for next year; if you have storage space, please feel free to send them next fall instead.

Valentines are due Jan 7, but sooner is always better so we can get some boxes packed ahead of the deadline.

Kris:After packing up 16 boxes in the past two days, I'm in serious need of Thank You, Thinking of you/Miss you, love and Valentines. Also need Any Hero notes.

Sandy: I'm starting to worry about the heroes on our waiting list for over a month now! I still have tons of heroes waiting for their next boxes....can't wait til the holidays are over so we can get back to getting boxes out. My shelves are nearly empty, I can use everything - birthday especially!
Dixie: My needs are for Miss You, Thank You, Thinking of you, and general cards.
Other ways you can help:
Post on your blog, Twitter, or Facebook about OWH.
Find friends who have a "stash" of cards that's collecting dust.
Host a cardmaking party of your own.
Set up a challenge for your friends online or at your stamp club.
Ask a local retailer for their old sample cards.
Help out by hosting a challenge on the Stars and Stamps blog!

Thank you to all our wonderful donors this week! You're still sending in cards during this busy season - 6,062 this week. Thanks for helping us keep up with our heroes!

Our shippers are hoping to get valentines boxes out to most of our waiting contacts in the next few weeks; we picked up so many extra names during the holidays, we always struggle with the next batch of boxes, so we really appreciate your help!

Reminder: If you're sending in a large quantity of one card design for Valentines Day, please make it asap - we'll be winding up valentines boxes and will have fewer boxes to spread out the multiples. Thanks!
