Thankful Thursday: December 29, 2011

Welcome to our final Thankful Thursday report of 2011! What a year it's been....we are so grateful for the support of so many crafters and donors across the nation - wow!

Your final reminder: If you want to make one more year-end financial donation, please do so by midnight December 31. Paypal is available as a last minute option - there's a link here.

The questions are beginning - "Can I write cards off on my taxes?" While we can't give you tax advice, since we're not tax professionals, some general guidance: think of it like any item donated to any nonprofit, like Goodwill. The IRS sees that as a donation, and you and your tax preparer decide on the value; the organization gives you a receipt for the items you give. You've had receipts emailed to you over 2011; we'll email a year-end summary in a few weeks for you.

The receipts have to go out in small increments per day with the system we have; we'll let you know here when you should have received yours. If you haven't received it by then, check your spam folder, and if it's still not there, it's possible we have no email address for you, or an incorrect one, so we'll let you know how to proceed to get the receipt sent. And if you've got an early tax appointment next week or something, just email and we'll get one out asap for you. :)

Thankful Thursday: December 1, 2011

Sneak peek at tonight's OWHtv card share!
Happy DECEMBER! Can you believe it's already time to start that 25 day countdown!?

We do have a shorter countdown to get rolling on - that's a TEN day count....to our Archway challenge deadline! We're only at 1346 valentines so far...so we have a long way to go to get to 5,000. But we KNOW you can do it!

Remember that you can also send valentines til December 31st, so if you do miss the 10th deadline, you're still ok to get them done in time. If you're worried about getting to the post office that last week of the month, focus on "love" cards that'll be ok if they're a wee bit late!

Archway + OWH = Special mission!

After our inaugural year of partnering to match sweets for sweets to send to our heroes —we're back again! This year we've upped our goal from 4,000 to 5000...lots and lots of love cards need to be sent homeward to carry our heroes' hearts to their families!

  • Deadline is Dec. 10th (cards can still come in til Dec 31, but will count for the match only til the 10th) and must be received on or before that day.
  • Cards need to be LOVE or VALENTINE themed
  • Cards need to meet OWH guidelines (no glitter, A2, etc)
  • Kids can send the "love" AnyHero coloring pages here or here and we'll count those too
  • Send in a packing slip with your cards with your info filled out, card count, and write "ARCHWAY" on the challenge line
And just to inspire us on getting more of those love cards sent in - upload a photo of your cards and drop a link below for us - it can be your favorite love card, your packaged up box, a plate of Archway cookies on your craft table (YUM!), a photo of your trip to the post office. Whatever you'd like to share!

For those awaiting it...our vlog for this weekend!

A sale and a prize for YOU too!
I Brake for Stamps is offering a coupon code for OWHers! We've added it to the Donate/Shop page, so you can pick up the code there. She's also offering a prize - a $25 gift certificate! We'll choose  a winner using random.org at the end of the contest from all qualified cards sent in (meeting the above requirements). Be sure your cards are in on time!

    Mailroom Monday: November 14, 2011

This week 10,790 cards were mailed out - at a cost of $430.00! Not bad for a week "after" all the holiday shipping! We do continue to support our heroes with general cards, and we appreciate your help in getting the cards made and out all over the globe!

If you're on our email list, you saw the notice that we have a retiring shipper: Dixie! We're so very grateful for all she's done for our heroes, our cardmakers, and the whole organization - you can read her own farewell message and leave her a note. She won't be far from OWH - because we expect her to redouble her efforts at making cards...I hear she already printed out packing slips for herself! :) We've got some special assignments coming her way once she takes a well-deserved break :)

Caro Hopkins is the replacement shipper - (check out her blog here) - she's been undergoing "shipper boot camp" under Dixie's tutelage for months and is ready to roll! She's learned the ropes, practiced inputting reports, packing boxes, writing letters and customs forms, and has been performing triage....let's not put her through TOO much of her paces by sending her cards that are ready to rock and roll as she gets her OWH shipper feet under her! ;)

The Mailroom page is updated with Caro's address - it's always safest to get shipping addresses from there in case there's ever a change, or if there's an important note that you might want to read before shipping your boxes. Kris and Sandy are still on the job as much as ever - so keep those cards and letters coming!

If you missed this weekend's vlog....it's a tired one! lol.

And now, what you came here for - the Mailroom Monday report!

In ONE week! That's our largest week of shipments ever....123 boxes of cards! For comparison:

    • September 2011: 60,278 ($2466.10)
    • October 2010: 91,115 ($3387.50)
    • October 2011: 93,678 ($3596.55)
    • All of November 2010: 54,801 ($2035.80)
    • First week of November 2011: 31,375 ($1186.45)
Many many thanks to all who sent in the amazing quantities of cards....we definitely had a recordsetting number this year! And the generous donors - WOW! You've kept up with these last crazy weeks of shipping, and we couldn't be more grateful. There's nothing like knowing we're going to the post office with the nation behind us!

We're saying farewell to our contacts from Iraq, as they redploy home - HOOAH! Some are contractors relocating to other places, and have already put in address changes so they can continue receiving our beautiful cards.
