[vlog] Hall-no-ween and hero mail...and money for your cruise!

Halloween note referred to in the vlog

Win money for YOUR cruise vacation
Enter the Craft it Forward contest - this month they're all about CARDS! Upload your card project here (click the "upload" button) - make sure your photo is well lit, crisp and clear - and be sure to include "OWH" in the title so we all know to vote for you! Poor photography and cryptic names won't get you too far.

During the week yours is posted (you'll be notified by email), get your friends and family to vote vote vote daily. After there are winners from each of the weeks, the contest folks pick one of the weekly winners to receive $500.00! Doesn't that sound like a deposit on your cruise berth??  Plus they give $500.00 to the charity of YOUR choice. How cool is that?
St Kitts...one of our ports of call! Lovely!

Cruising videos

A little search on YouTube comes up with tons of goodies on our ship, the Navigator of the Seas! See if these inspire you to go sign up....

A slideshow with photos of our Eastern Caribbean ports included....

This one shows the ship amenities...they really DO have an ice skating rink, with an ice show at night, and open skating during the day! They say "something for everyone" ... but do they have a stamp store on the promenade? lol! Check out the dining room too, beautiful....fancy shmancy! 3 pools, 6 hot tubs....yeah baby!

Check out YouTube for more videos...search for Navigator of the Seas!

Cruise: Philipsburg, St. Maarten, Netherlands Antilles (St. Martin)

From your cruise afficionado, Sandy....I'm not the cruise director (that'd be Sherry!) but I'm looking through all the cruise details, and will be sharing more each weekend here. As I find out more and more about this cruise - the more exciting it sounds!

Today I'll look at one of the ports of call, where we'll be on February 7th from 8am to 6pm....this will definitely be worth getting up early in the morning for! Once you sign up you'll be given links to read more about all these fun things. I'm going to give you my own short interpretation of some of the options....there's TONS of info out there for each one, once you sign up.

Remember - the first 25 people to sign up get a gift from OWH!!!

Note that these excursions will each have a fare associated with them that isn't included in the cruise cost.

Two Island Sand and Shopping...resort and island shopping for fashion...over to a village with sidewalk cafes, palm trees, and French fashion shopping. (Ooh la la!) Then it's off to Orient Bay for some sun and sand time, swimming and snorkeling and parasailing if you choose. (I am NOT getting off the surface of the earth, I'm just sayin'...) There's a butterfly farm sure to please the kids (and the crafters!)

Half-day Catamaran sailing and snorkeling - a boat that takes 80 sunlovers out to sea! And after the last snorkel stop, rum punch and beer, island music....oh this sounds like heaven! (Those who go on the cruise can ask me about the rum punch adventure at Grand Cayman. That's one special story!)

Snorkeling at Creole Rock....an imtimate snorkeling adventure on a motorboat with only 15 guests. In 8feet of water you could see a rare frogfish, puffer fish (oh my how I'd love to see one,  not just in a stamp!), barracudas, and reef fish. Nonsnorkelers can also enjoy this too with flotation belts and float boards. Whatever those are!

Rock n Roll Snorkel Safari....The mothership "Rock n Roll" will take guests through Marigot Harbor, Friars Bay, Happy Bay, and Creole Rock. I'm only guessing, but the music might please your teens?

Pirates of the Caribbean Day Sail!! Oh wow JOHNNY DEPP? Pretty please?? Well maybe not but I've always wanted to sail on a tall ship, so this could be the excursion for me. BBQ ribs and chicken, French bread and cheese, fruit....woohoo! I used to sail regular boats, so a tall ship would be a TREAT!

Private International Shopping Spree.... Do they have a stamp store?! I don't see one on the list....so this one sounds like it's for the supershoppers out there.

Sail to Nirvana...sailing with 20 others....ahhhhh! Baie Rouge and Baie Longue are the destinations, where lots of turtles, sting ray, eel, starfish, and other critters can be seen. The boat anchors close enough to shore to swim and chill out on the beach.

Private Kunstenaars and Artistes....visiting artists and art galleries! Wow!

The rest of the excursions look to be 'private' variations on some of these other activities...beaches, shopping, sailing, touring. So if you hit the lottery, you could go wild with a custom tour of the islands!

Which do you think I should go on? Which would YOU go on if you were coming....are these excursions giving you island fever yet?

Thankful Thursday: August 4, 2011

Many many thanks to all who provided us with such beautiful cards this week! You all ROCK!

We've had a number of new cardmakers join us and write notes on their packing slips - so would love to address some of those questions here. If one person is asking, likely someone else would also like to know! We'll also address these a little on OWHtv this evening.

  • The tuck: Why? It would sure be "easier" to simply intermix cards and envelopes in the boxes. However - sometimes our heroes are in a hurry and they may just dump a box out on a bunk! If they're tucked, as shown, they stay together - so each card always has an envelope. To perfom the tuck, put the back of the card inside the envelope and allow the front of the card to hang out. Fold the flap backwards. If the card folds on the short side instead of long, put it all the way inside the envelope.
  • Why no handwritten sentiments? We've heard from a few wives who were taken aback by seeing a woman's handwriting on a card front - when they expected the card to be from their husbands. While they eventually do figure out it was a donated card, we want to save even the smallest amount of worry for any of our military spouses. So if you don't have a sentiment stamp or sticker, feel free to leave the card with no sentiment at all.
  • How do you want the cards sorted? By themes really helps us! *Thinking of you, miss you, thanks, love, birthday, holiday. And separating winter from Christmas as well as Fall from Halloween and Thanksgiving also is a bonus! If you have a ton of a particular design, keeping those together helps too. Dividers can be stickynotes, scraps of paper, whatever you'd like to stick between groupings. Also - please don't turn every other card upside down; it may help you squeeze more into your boxes, but it makes a lot of trouble for shippers to turn them all back around when they arrive. Thanks for your help!
Don't forget to tune in at 6:30pm Pacific tonight for OWHtv - we'll have a special guest! Hint: He'll be in uniform! After the show is complete, we'll upload it to YouTube and remove it from uStream - so our uStream channel is bare now that everything's been converted over. You can catch reruns now on the YouTube playlist for OWHtv. Be sure to give some thumbs up and leave some comments; we already had a troll go through and 'dislike' some of them. Boohiss on trolls!

Special Mission: Wounded Warrior PFC MCConnell

We need your cards of encouragement - not just for AnyHero, but for a specific injured hero, PFC Derek McConnell.

Visit the online journal on Caring Bridge that describes the circumstances of his injury. This is an excerpt from that site, from a LT in Derek's Platoon:
On 23 July 2011, PFC McConnell went above and beyond the call of duty. His valorous actions that morning led to the secured MEDEVAC of his wounded comrades during the first IED engagement. He then suffered life-threatening injuries after striking two PPIEDs himself. His personal sacrifice, and complete disregard for his own safety, ensured the security of his fellow soldiers throughout 3rd Platoon’s operation. PFC McConnell’s actions are in keeping with the finest traditions of military service and reflect distinct credit upon himself, 3rd Platoon (Wolverines), Bravo Company (Blackhawks), 2-87th Infantry Regiment (Catamounts), 3rd Brigade Combat Team (Spartans), and the United States Army.

I know nothing will ever change what happened but, I want you to know that he is one of my best soldiers.Truly an inspiration to have served in our platoon. Derek was incredibly brave that day...I was so impressed by his lack of fear and his willingness to do his job to the utmost in the face of the danger. The story of the entire patrol goes much deeper than "Derek stepped on an IED". I am submitting him to be awarded the Bronze Star (with Valor Device) for his actions and unwavering courage that day.
PFC McConnell, center
Cards to wounded warriors should still have no glitter; open wounds in hospitals are not friendly to glitter. Please send your cards of encouragement to the address below, and post a comment here so we know how many we're getting sent out his way!

Mailroom Monday: August 1, 2011

This week 12,700 cards were mailed out - at a cost of $497.05! It's so amazing that the cards keep coming, the finances to ship them just shows up - thank you all for your uber-generosity!

We've updated the Hero Blog with some really special notes - here's an excerpt of the Kleenex Alert letter from the tail end of last Thursday's OWHtv:
To tell you how your cards have made a difference to my family, I'd like to share with you a little about me. My husband and I have 3 daughters; 6, 12, and 16 years old. Our 6 yr old barely remembers my last deployment (thankfully) as she was only 2 then. Our older 2 girls are blind. With your tactile designs, I have written my girls quite often, always taking care and extensive deliberation over which cards they would enjoy most (best "feeling"). Of course for my youngest I chose cute cards, whether silly or pretty but all associated to aesthetically pleasing.
