Thankful Thursday: September 22, 2011

Wow, thanks to everyone who's been sending in the great cards!! You ROCK!

Stay tuned this weekend to the vlog (the 4 minute video blog posted by Sandy) if you're interested in how we're doing on our fundraising. That gets posted on Sandy's personal YouTube channel here if you want to subscribe to that; you can also watch the Stars and Stamps blog and Facebook, it'll get reposted on those as well.

And of course don't forget - it's Thursday, so you know what that means...OWHtv!! You'll see a really cute Christmas card idea. And also get to chat with others throughout the show! Stump Sandy returns with 'vetted' papers. (See last week's show to hear what that's all about!)

Mailroom Monday: September 19, 2011

This week 7091 cards were mailed out - at a cost of $278.90! And that only includes two of our shippers; one had family business to attend to, so while she did mail boxes, they'll be on next week's report rather than this week's. October is when our shipping gets completely nuts - not just 8-10 boxes per shipper per week - it's several trips for each shipper with that many boxes! Ho Ho Ho!

Several folks have asked how we're doing on our fundraising goal for the holiday shipping. You might remember our goal is $13,000, enough to ship 1,000 boxes.

Unfortunately so far, we've only reached $2,544.12. If you're busy collecting money from friends and family, keep going! :) You or anyone else can give directly by PayPal here, or mail checks to our HQ location (or your local shipper). HQ address:
Operation Write Home
35205 13th Pl SW
Federal Way WA 98023
Please include an email address so we can email a receipt.

If you'd like to set up a fundraising page to help request your friends and family join in our efforts, you can go here and follow the instructions following the 'Start Fundraising' button. It doesn't cost you to set up a page - and makes it easy to invite people to give. We want to be able to mail out all these beautiful cards, so please help us pay the postman :)

Boxes mailed out in the last week included:

Vlog [uh oh, Sandy's singing]...plus Cruise ports!

And now...a quick overview of our cruise ports! Go do some research and leave us links with what YOU would go see/do if you got to go! (Need a link to the cruise site? Go here!)

Whether you've signed up for the cruise or are thinking about it, we have gathered some quick links to save you time, where you can read about the history, culture, climate, etc. of our destinations and view some beautiful photos!

EASTERN CARIBBEAN MAP
The first thing we looked for was a good map of the Eastern Caribbean sea region, showing exactly where the cruise is going and where the islands are located. Here's a link to a good map; you can right-click anywhere on the map, left-click on Marquee Zoom, and keep hitting left-click to make the map larger and larger!

Look for our ports of call, which are:
-Philipsburg on the island of Saint Maarten (the Dutch side of the island of St. Martin)
-Basseterre on the island of St. Kitts-Nevis
-San Juan on the island of Puerto Rico
-Labadee on the island of Haiti, is not shown on the above map; it's a private Royal Caribbean beach resort on the north coast of Haiti.

OH THE PLACES WE'LL GO!
Our first stop is Philipsburg, St. Maarten, known as "The Friendly Island." St. (Sint) Maarten is the Dutch side of the island; the French side is called St. Martin. An excellent website for further reading is www.st-maarten.com which has info on "What to do in one day" (the ship is docked there from 8 am to 6 pm). It's also interesting to read about St. Maarten's long and colorful history, from the Arawak Indians to the island's discovery by Christopher Columbus in 1493 on his second voyage to the multi-cultured tourist mecca of today!
Another good website is Sint-Maarten - click on Island Info (maps, history, etc.), Sightseeing, and Things to Do.
If you're hungry for more info, check it out on Wikipedia!

ON TO BASSETERRE!
The next stop is Basseterre on the island of St. Kitts/Nevis, where the ship will again dock for the day (7 am-5 pm)!  Basseterre is a scenic little town that is one of the oldest towns in the Eastern Caribbean.(don't forget your camera!)

OLD SAN JUAN
We will have part of one day to tour historic San Juan, the capital of Puerto Rico, where the first Spanish settlement was founded by Juan Ponce de Leon in 1508. According to a Wikipedia article, which you can read in full at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/San_Juan_Puerto_Rico, the historic area is known for "narrow streets made of blue cobblestones and picturesque colonial buildings, some of which date back to the 16th and 17th century." History buffs: are you getting excited now?

ONE LAST STOP: LABADEE!
in addition to the fun Labadee link above at Royal Caribbean's website, you can read about Labadee at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Labadee . There are many fun things to do at Labadee, or you can enjoy the relaxation of a half-day on the beach enjoying the scenery!

Hopefully these links save you some research time and demonstrate what a beautiful cruise this should be! Remember, to learn more about the cruise or book your cabin(s), go to the official cruise page. Don't hesitate to pepper the travel agency, Cruise and Crop, with your questions. They are there to help you!

Cruisin' tips and research!

If you've signed up - or have emailed to tell us you're coming but just haven't booked yet - you should have received an email from Sandy yesterday. If not, please email; we don't have email addresses for all the cruisers, and we have info we'd like to share with those going with us.

This week we have some important tips for our traveling folks:

Passports: Remember to check your passport or apply for one if you plan to join us on the OWH Cruise in February 2012!! According to the State Department website, it is currently taking approximately 4-6 weeks for the processing of "routine" passport applications. You must have a valid passport with you on the cruise.

Are you thinking about the cruise but are new to cruising and have lots of questions? Or would you just like to read more about Royal Caribbean's Navigator of the Seas (our ship), its amenities and services? There are various cruise review sites out there but we've narrowed down some good starting points for your research:

Royal Caribbean International is a very good place to start. Click on "All About Cruising" and explore the site thoroughly! In addition to the land excursions Royal Caribbean offers in each port, there are many things to do onboard ship in addition to our OWH activities! You will need the full 8 days just to explore the ship and all the fun things to do, or you can opt for cardmaking and total relaxation!

You may also want to check out Cruise Critic, a forum where people submit reviews of the ships they have traveled on. The site also provides tips for first-time cruisers, and additional ideas for excursions not offered by the cruise lines too.

You may have heard of Fodor's, which is a well-known publisher of travel guides. Their website offers cruise reviews and their own Royal Caribbean page.

These sites are not only fun to explore but hopefully will help you make your decision about joining us on OWH's first-ever cardmaking cruise!

Cruise: BIG Announcement & another excursion review

It's time to review another set of port excursions! I hope you're all getting excited...if you haven't signed up yet, get rolling! Oh wait - sailing! :)

Before we get a taste of the Wednesday excursions...check out the exciting announcement in this weekend's 4minute vlog....we have a very special guest attending our cruise! If you've been on the fence so far, you might just want to sign up right away before our spots fill up in the craft room!

We're so thrilled that Jennifer is coming with us! We're such a little organization in the big scheme of crafting - this is a huge feather in our cap! And now...on to the excursion review!

By the way - the info on our excursions is available here - the descriptions here are my quick reviews of the detailed info on the Royal Caribbean website, so click to read more details and book excursions!

On Wednesday, February 8, we'll be docking at Basseterre, St Kitts/Nevis, and have a variety of excursion options to choose from. (You can also go to a number of sites online and plan  your own excursion - many have reviews, contact information, and special pricing...but the ones here are provided by Royal Carribbean.)

First up is a Beach Extravaganza....perfect for beach bums who want to work on a tan! Chairs, beverages, transportation - and hopefully plenty of SUN!

Panoramic St Kitts - a tour of historical Basseterre, gardens, a batik factory, a botanical paradise, and a scenic drive to a hill overlooking Frigate Bay - sounds like inspiration for cardmaking when you're back on board!

There's another "Essential" St Kitts tour - visiting the gardens and batik studios, and an exploration of the 300 year-old Brimstone Hill Fortress....as well as....shopping!

Or you might be the type to visit a Caribbean Plantation from the 18th century with its beautiful gardens! Then it's a nice stop at the beach for some relaxing in the sun and water.

The Fairview Greathouse trip will also sport some lovely gardens to inspire you...and end with a trip to the beach. Sensing a theme? Bet there are some beautiful beaches here!

Interested in nature? How about the Eco Explorer tour! Hiking through nature and learning about local flowering plants and shrubs....they say it's "long enough to enjoy, short enough to be comfortable."

You can also see the island in an Island Adventure 4x4 Safari! Take an Ex-British Army Troop Truck on a tour of some breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea.

Another great nature trip is the Rainforest Adventure...llush mountain forest, rich biodiversity. This trip includes some other stops as well - and sampling of local fruits in season. Yum!

And for the snorkelers - check out the virgin reefs "abundantly alive" with an array of fish, corals, fans and sponges.

So who's ready to book! This is going to be one fabulous adventure!
