Mailroom Monday: April 9, 2012

Oh my! No wonder our shippers are tuckered after the last week...we mailed 76 packages - that's 21,698 cards!!! At a cost of $943.50 - wowsers! Thank you to all of you who continue to send in donations so we can keep the packages going out! :) :) :)

A few notes about the list below: You'll see a lot of small numbers going out to a lot of our folks; that's because they got flat rate envelopes instead of boxes. Some were because we didn't have enough Mother's Day cards earlier on, so when we had enough left at the end, we sent an extra batch. Others were because we only had Mother's Day cards left, and no thinking of you/thank you/etc cards to go with them, so they just got Mother's Day cards. Envelopes are a very inefficient way to ship - this is why we have our deadlines set as we do, and we beg cardmakers to get their cards in early. The shipping season for a holiday is a few weeks long, and we need them both early - and before our posted deadlines - in order to best serve our heroes!

Why not increase the lead times for the deadlines? That way you won't get a bunch at the last minute and the shippers have a bit more time to get the cards off in time. And card makers won't stress over comments about how cards are always arriving right at the deadline (which, since it's a posted date, should be just fine) and upsetting the flow of everything.

We actually have increased the deadlines - and get less cards because of it, since people aren't thinking about holidays early enough. It's a fine line to balance - if the cards actually arrived on or before the deadline, we'd be better off, but lots don't mail them til a week past the deadline...we do what we can to try to get them out in time for our heroes to use them, but 'late' is often the norm for people nowadays....
