Hello everyone - and happy Thursday! I have a treat for you today....a photo of the cards that came in from Paper Crafts Magazine! They send in the cards submitted for the Stamping Royalty contests they hold - so if you've ever thought about entering, but didn't because you wanted that special card to go to a hero....never fear, these cards get to make the journey to our heroes and back! All 1,117 cards were just so beautiful....we love seeing people making their cards "publication-worthy" like this! :)

Thankful Thursday: May 3, 2012


Here's a special treat for you on this Thankful Thursday..."My first deployment; longest ever away from my little man (18 months old).  This is him opening up a card made by awesome people at Operation Write Home.  He loved it!" -TSGT Y.P.
How's that for motivation! 

I've had several questions regarding my note on the Mailroom Monday post - I had noticed it was the first month in quite a while when we didn't receive enough donations to cover that month's shipping costs. (We were only behind a couple hundred, so we didn't miss it by much!) The only part that concerns me is that the majority of the year when we fundraise a little extra, that's the nest egg preparing for the Christmas season to come..so as long as we don't have a lot of months like April, we'll still be fine. We are so so so grateful to all who are always so generous to keep our work going!

Huge thanks to everyone who sent in cards this last week as we finished up the Father's Day cards; you'll be causing all sorts of smiles like this little boy at mailboxes across America in the next month!

Happy Thursday! Today I thought I'd show you a crazy cardboard sculpture....ha! If our shippers had time they could maybe make something out of all the cardboard that arrives at their houses....we need to keep them busy enough packing cards that there's no time for sculptures though :)
And....though I'm mostly over last week's flu, I apparently had a braincramp while assembling the Tutorial post this week about using scraps....and totally forgot to post the kite tutorial! So----it's there now, feel free to check it out here. Sorry for that oops!

It's Thursday....and we're so grateful as always for your support! Ciara wanted to share this card from Kim with you today...what a good owner Charlie is....he's got an OWHer's heart!

And I wanted to let you know, if you hadn't seen it yet - that last weekend's vlog was an April Fools joke! I truly wasn't expecting that many people to watch the first video on their smart devices and not see part 2; when watching a video with clickable annotations on one of those devices, the annotations don't appear. Thankful Thursday: March 1, 2012

Goooooooood Thursday to you all! Many thanks go out to those who are helping us catch up on our waiting list units and keep up with those we've got already in rotation....you're a big blessing to so many people!!

Today's Thursday, of course, and it's OWHtv day - so don't forget to tune in to the show tonight.

It's also the first day of March....and we've got something different we'll be trying on Facebook for you. We've had SUCH a big response to the card shares on OWHtv - crafters are loving the simple changes they see that they can make to their cards to make big improvements - so we're sharing some 'before/afters' all month. Each of the pairs is made by me (Sandy) - and will hopefully show you how to take a simple card, sometimes one with sneeze, or something that could just use a little dressing up....and do just a small something to give it a punch. It'll be a bit of work to do it for each day, but the designs will be pretty simple ones so I can keep up! This is today's pair...starting out with a bit of sticker sneeze, brought together with some simple punched circles for organization, and the detail of rounded corners.

After the month, we'll do what we do with all the Facebook cards - put them in our card gallery. That way those who don't follow along on Facebook, and those who don't watch OWHtv, can still get a taste of what we've been doing and learning. *and yes, I'm learning along with you all! You have no idea what it takes me to put together cards that step up one notch each time...it's a learning curve for me too!*

Happy Thursday! I'm so excited to report our numbers went up a bit this week....hooah! We received 8,398 cards - which is close to what we had received for the whole month of January before that - - thank you to everyone stepping up to keep our boxes going out!

Welcome to our final Thankful Thursday report of 2011! What a year it's been....we are so grateful for the support of so many crafters and donors across the nation - wow!

Your final reminder: If you want to make one more year-end financial donation, please do so by midnight December 31. Paypal is available as a last minute option - there's a link here.

The questions are beginning - "Can I write cards off on my taxes?" While we can't give you tax advice, since we're not tax professionals, some general guidance: think of it like any item donated to any nonprofit, like Goodwill. The IRS sees that as a donation, and you and your tax preparer decide on the value; the organization gives you a receipt for the items you give. You've had receipts emailed to you over 2011; we'll email a year-end summary in a few weeks for you.

The receipts have to go out in small increments per day with the system we have; we'll let you know here when you should have received yours. If you haven't received it by then, check your spam folder, and if it's still not there, it's possible we have no email address for you, or an incorrect one, so we'll let you know how to proceed to get the receipt sent. And if you've got an early tax appointment next week or something, just email and we'll get one out asap for you. :)
